Statue of Queen Victoria

Statue of Queen Victoria

1906
Sculptor: George Frampton (1860–1928)
Commissioned for the Diamond Jubliee
Marble, on marble pedestal
Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

In honor of Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, funds were raised to construct a new hospital for Newcastle and a statue of the queen. Both were inaugurated by King Edward VII in 1906. The monumental marble figure portrays the young Victoria standing in official robes with orb, scepter, and crown. Like other memorials to Victoria erected in the Edwardian era, Newcastle’s statue was a monument to the Victorian age itself, marking a legacy to be taken forward into the new century.
