Inverary Pier is one of a series of paintings in which Joseph Mallord William Turner looked back at his long career, often repeating compositions from his print project the Liber Studiorum. The paintings are meditations on the representation of light, which had preoccupied Turner from his earliest days as an artist and which ties him to the French Impressionists who came after him. This painting, which is probably unfinished, positions the viewer looking east, and therefore into the burning rays of the rising sun.
