John Walsh attended Yale University (B.A. 1961) and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was a curator of paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, then Director of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. He teaches part-time at the Yale University Art Gallery and in the Department of the History of Art.
