First version, acquired by Henry Vane at auction, London, 1859

In 1859, The Greek Slave was put up for auction by Phillips of Bond Street. No information has come to light as to what prompted John Grant to sell his statue. It was acquired by Henry Vane, 2nd Duke of Cleveland (1788–1864), for 1,800 guineas.
