Second version, completed in Florence, 1846
The second version was ordered by William Ward (later the 1st Earl of Dudley) in September 1844. Before it was completed, Ward agreed to release his claim on the statue, so that Powers could send it on an exhibition tour in North America. He later purchased the fourth version.
