View of Tivoli with Rome in the Distance

View of Tivoli with Rome in the Distance

1650s
Gaspard Dughet
1615-1675
Oil on canvas
30 x 49 1/2 in. (76 x 126 cm)

Dughet’s works, together with those of Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa, were emulated and imitated by British artists traveling in Italy and offered essential models for representing classic vistas and Antique monuments. Dughet was particularly associated with the landscape around Tivoli. This view of the town is largely imaginary but essentially depicts the bank of the river Aniene, with the Temple of Vesta visible above the cascade, the Roman Campagna receding into the distance on the right, and the dome of St Peter’s on the horizon.
