Statue of Queen Victoria

Statue of Queen Victoria

1891
Sculptor: Giuseppe Valente
Commissioned for the Golden Jubilee
Marble, on marble pedestal
Valletta, Malta

Made by the Sicilian sculptor Giuseppe Valente, this statue shows Queen Victoria wearing a shawl of Maltese lace. It was paid for by public subscription and erected in front of the National Library, in Republic Square, to commemorate the 1887 Golden Jubilee. Ten years after its unveiling, the statue provided a focal point for an elaborate memorial ceremony marking the Queen’s death, when many in Britain and throughout the empire mourned the only monarch they had known in their lifetimes.
