Statue of Queen Victoria

Statue of Queen Victoria

1905
Sculptor: Thomas Brock (1847-1922)
Bronze, on granite pedestal, with bronze reliefs and bronze figures
Agra, India (removed 1947)

The unveiling ceremony for Thomas Brock’s statue at Agra was one of many similar official engagements undertaken by the Prince of Wales (the future King George V) and his wife during their six-month tour across British India, which began in Bombay in November 1905 and concluded in Karachi in April 1906. The much publicized tour was intended to “strengthen the loyalty of India” while allowing the future emperor to “know his people.” A newspaper report on the unveiling at Agra described the statue as presiding over a landscape of Mughal imperial monuments.
