Fourth version, completed in Florence for William Ward, 1848

William Ward (1817–85) ordered a Greek Slave in 1844, and Powers’s second version was intended for him. However, Ward released this version, to allow Powers to tour the statue in North America. Powers completed the fourth version for Ward in 1848, having made several modifications to the statue upon his patron’s request. (See Karen Lemmey’s essay for further details about Ward’s commission.) Ward was heir to the Dudley estate, one of the most valuable landed estates in England. Often referred to as Lord Ward, he formally took the title of 1st Earl of Dudley in 1860.
