Second version, exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, 1848

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, founded in 1805, was home to a renowned art collection and held regular exhibitions. The Greek Slave was shown in the Academy’s new and improved home, which had opened in 1847 after a fire had destroyed the old building. The new building was located on the same site on Chestnut Street. The exhibition was one of the few occasions that this version of The Greek Slave was shown in a venue explicitly associated with fine art. Richard P. Wunder gives the exhibition dates as June 8 to July 25, 1848.[1]
