Third version, completed in Florence, 1847

The third version of The Greek Slave was commissioned by Sir Charles Henry Coote of Ballyfin, Ireland, in 1845. However, in 1847 he asked Powers to release him from his commitment, on account of the Irish potato famine. Powers decided to send the statue to North America on exhibition to take the place of the second version, which he had been forced to cede to James Robb of New Orleans. As before, Miner K. Kellogg managed the tour. (See Tanya Pohrt’s essay.)
