Acquired at auction by Franklin J. Murphy, New York, 1919

The death of J. R. Delamar in 1918 prompted the auction of his art collection. The Greek Slave was sold to Franklin J. Murphy (1846–1920), a businessman and politician who had distinguished himself during the Civil War in the Union Army. Murphy was the founder of the Murphy Varnish Company and served as governor of New Jersey from 1902 to 1905.
