After years of financial difficulties, the Corcoran Gallery was dissolved in 2014. The art collection, comprising some 17,000 works, was formally placed in the custody of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. In February 2015, an exhibition titled American Masterworks from the Corcoran, 1815–1940, was held to mark this historic event, in which The Greek Slave was displayed alongside other works from the Corcoran collection. Over the course of that year, curators from the National Gallery sifted through the collections and acquired more than 8,000 works, including The Greek Slave, for the museum. In August 2015, The Greek Slave was installed on the ground floor of the West Building.
