First version, on view at Raby Castle, Staindrop, from 1859

Upon his acquisition of John Grant’s Greek Slave in London, Henry Vane, 2nd Duke of Cleveland, immediately moved the statue to his country seat at Raby Castle in Staindrop, County Durham. It appears to have been initially placed in the Barons’ Hall and later moved to the Octagon Room. Raby Castle was open to a limited public, and guidebooks often mentioned the famous statue, although no images have so far come to light showing the statue in situ. The Greek Slave, on its original pedestal, remains at Raby Castle today, the only version still in private ownership.
