Exhibited at the Hôtel d’Osmont, Paris, 1855

In 1855 John Grant reportedly lent his statue to speculators for exhibition in Paris, with the intention of making a profit. The Hôtel d’Osmont seems to have had a mixed reputation for a variety of popular entertainments, including human displays. (This is further discussed in Martina Droth’s essay.) The Greek Slave appears to have been presented alongside a traveling show of two children from Natal, South Africa, billed as the “Earthmen.” Tickets for the statue were one franc; for the children, ten sous.
