After E. W.  Stoughton’s death in 1882, The Greek Slave passed to his widow, Mary Fiske Stoughton. Sometime around 1883 it was placed on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A photograph published in 1889 gives an indication of how sculptures were displayed at the Met. (The photograph does not include The Greek Slave)
