In January 1870, Henry P. Gray, president of the National Academy of Design, wrote to E. W. Stoughton to request that this “final copy” of The Greek Slave be exhibited at the Academy prior to going to Stoughton’s private residence. Richard P. Wunder gives the exhibition dates as January to February 1870.[1]
