English artists in Wales were enchanted by the ruins they found, many of them remnants of the conquest of Wales by Edward I in the thirteenth century. In this image of Criccieth Castle in North Wales, the grandeur of the ruins on the top of the cliff contrast with the quaint and quiet village. A ship sailing offshore may register a continued English presence in the landscape.
