Thomas Rowlandson

Thomas Rowlandson

Thomas Rowlandson was born in London but is thought to have trained in France (though little evidence of this survives), where he established  his talents as a draftsman and watercolorist.  Like his friend James Gillray, Rowlandson was best known for political and social caricatures, particularly the print series Tours of Dr. Syntax published between 1812 and 1820 with verses by Dr. William CombeRowlandson traveled extensively throughout his career and was in Wales a number of times, most notably in 1797 for a tour upon which he completed a number of watercolors.
